Surya, Sathyaraj, Vadivelu, Kovai Sarala, Hareesh Peradi, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen, and. The plot centers on two brothers, one of which is a magician seeking to get revenge for the deaths and medical malpractice of his parents, and the other of whom is a reputable physician who charges his patient's pitiful sums. Principal shooting for the movie began on February 1 in Chennai and was finished in September after 130 working days. Both Gdask, Poland, and Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, were used for filming.

After working with Vijay on his films Udhaya (2004) and Azhagiya Tamizh Magan (2007) and for the first time with Atlee, A. R. Rahman created the soundtrack album and background music for Mersal. Vivek, who also collaborates with Rahman for the first time, wrote the lyrics for the movie. It was Vijay and Rahman's first release during the silver jubilee year. Sony Music India paid a record amount for the audio rights to the movie. On August 10 and 17, 2017, the songs "Aalaporaan Thamizhan" and "Neethanae" were made available as singles. Within 10 days, the album received 100 million streams, breaking the previous record for a Tamil album. Zee Tamil purchased the television broadcast rights in July 2017 for 30 crores.
The day before Diwali, on October 18, 2017, Mersal was made available globally. Critics praised Vijay's acting, the music by A. R. Rahman, the cinematography, the social message, and Atlee's directing, but they criticized the formulaic narrative and the film's duration as being too long. It has also received a number of honors. One of the highest-grossing Tamil movies, the movie made 260 crores (US$34 million) globally and was a financial triumph. On January 25, 2018, the movie's 100-day theatrical run came to an end. HGC Entertainment distributed the movie on December 6 in China. The movie was shown in Grand Rex, France's biggest movie theatre, due to its popularity.
